Understand your data connections

The map view in Data Manager provides a spatial framework to help you better understand your data connections:

  • Data sources: This is the origin of your data, such as a website, a customer relationship management (CRM) platform, or an offline file.
  • Mechanisms: These are the tools used to move your data into Google, such as the Google tag, Data Manager connectors, and the Data Manager application programming interface (API).
  • Use cases: These are the end destinations for your data, primarily represented by your conversion actions in the Map view.

Benefits

By using map view visualizations in Data manager, you can:

  • Visually represent the connections from data sources to destinations
  • Better understand how to connect and create data sources
  • Pinpoint data bottlenecks
  • Simplify troubleshooting

Supported data sources and use cases

The map view in Data manager currently supports the following connections:

  • Google tags: Includes Google Tag Manager and Google Tag containers.
  • Supported direct and partner-enabled data sources in Data Manager: Data source connectors such as Salesforce, BigQuery, HubSpot. Learn more about Supported data sources.
Note: Audiences, campaigns, conversion statuses, and some data sources are not currently supported in the map view in Data manager. You can find this information on their dedicated pages in Google Ads.

Use map view in Data manager

  1. In your Google Ads account, go to Data manager within the Tools menu.
  2. Click the toggle for Map view, to view the data connection map for your data sources.
  3. Hover over the individual nodes, to view additional information about the data source, conversion action, or audience segment.

Interact with the map view

You can use the following interactive features to explore your data landscape:

  • Hover for details: Hover over any node to view a summary card.
  • Path highlighting: When you hover over a specific node, the map highlights the entire data lineage from source to destination, helping you trace connections in complex accounts.
  • Accounts: Expand the accounts node between data source and conversions to switch between MCC level and serving account views.
  • Expand large groups: If you have many conversion actions or audience segments connected to a single source, you can expand to view the full list.
  • Fix data source issues: When you hover over a data source and an error is detected, the summary card will show the issue. Click Fix to resolve any identified issue.

Troubleshoot and manage connections

The Map view is a central hub for identifying and resolving data connection issues. You can use the following options to manage and better understand connections:

  • Status indicators: Data source nodes with issues will display a broken state or a red status indicator.
  • Direct actions: You can click Fix issue or Manage on a hover card to navigate directly to the diagnostics or setup pages for that specific connection.
  • Diagnostic scope: Data Manager provides diagnostic alerts at the data source level. To see the types of errors that Data Manager can surface for you, see Troubleshoot connection issues.
