Manage or delete the Gemini app on your Android device

If you want to change how Gemini activates on Android or just prefer a different digital assistant experience, you don't always need to delete the Gemini mobile app. Depending on what you want, you can:

• Change how & where you can activate Gemini
  • Remove Gemini from your Power button
  • Turn off "Hey Google" so Gemini doesn’t open by voice
  • Stop Gemini from opening when your phone is locked
• Switch from Gemini to Google Assistant
• Change or remove your default digital assistant app
• Delete the Gemini mobile app
• Manage Gemini in other Google products

Important: The steps below vary by Android device. For steps specific to your device, check your device manufacturer’s help center.

To keep the Gemini app but stop Gemini from opening when you hold your Power or Home button, change your Gestures settings.

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open Settings.
2. Tap System Gestures Press & hold power button.
3. Select the action you want when you press and hold the power button.
   • Tip: “Digital assistant” opens your default digital assistant app.

To keep the Gemini app but stop Gemini from opening when it hears “Hey Google,” turn off “Hey Google.”

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gemini mobile app .
2. At the top, tap your Profile picture or initial Settings Talk to Gemini hands-free.
3. Turn off "Hey Google."

Important: If you already stopped Gemini from activating by voice or touch, you must unlock your phone and open the Gemini mobile app to use Gemini.

If the Gemini app starts when you don’t want it to when your phone is locked, you can turn off Gemini on your lock screen.

You can switch to using Google Assistant as your primary assistant on your phone or tablet in your settings.

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your Gemini mobile app .
2. At the top, tap your Profile picture or initial Switch to Google Assistant Google Assistant.
3. In the "Switch to Google Assistant?" dialog, tap Switch.

If you switch to Google Assistant as your primary assistant:

• When you say, “Hey Google,” or activate your mobile assistant by touch (like when you press and hold the power button), Google Assistant will respond.
• If your Web & App Activity is turned on, data from your interactions with Google Assistant will be saved to your Google Account. Learn more about how Google Assistant works with your data.
• Data saved in your Gemini Apps Activity will not automatically be deleted, but you can review and delete it anytime.

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open Settings.
2. Tap Apps Default apps Digital assistant app.
3. Tap Default digital assistant app.
4. Select a different assistant app or None.
   • “Google” is selected if you use either Google Assistant or Gemini as your default digital assistant app.

• Delete your Gemini chat in Google Messages.
• Manage Gemini in Chrome settings. This includes steps to remove the Gemini icon from your Chrome browser and desktop system tray or menu bar.
• Manage smart features for Google Workspace. This includes Gemini in Workspace apps like Gmail, Docs, and more.
