Talk naturally with Gemini Live

With Gemini Live, you can have a natural, free-flowing conversation with Gemini. You can even interrupt it like when you want to add more details or change the topic of the conversation. With Gemini Live, you can:

  • Talk back and forth: Talk to Gemini without typing, and Gemini will respond back verbally.
  • Brainstorm ideas out loud: Ask for a gift idea, to plan an event, or to make a business plan.
  • Explore: Uncover more details about topics that interest you.
  • Practice aloud: Rehearse for important moments in a more natural and conversational way.

Important: We’re gradually releasing updates to Gemini Live, so the latest changes might not be available to you just yet.

What you need

  • An Android phone or tablet.
  • The Gemini mobile app, or Gemini as your mobile assistant.
    • For now, Gemini Live isn’t available in the Gemini web app or Gemini in Google messages.
  • A personal Google Account that you manage on your own.
    • For now, Gemini Live isn’t available while signed in to a work or school Google Account.
  • Be 18 or over.
  • To use this feature, you must be signed in to Gemini Apps. Learn how to sign in to Gemini Apps.

Before you use Gemini Live

Go Live with Gemini

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gemini mobile app .
    • You can also go Live by saying “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or “Hey Google, let’s talk.”
  2. At the bottom, tap Live .
  3. For your first time, follow any on-screen instructions.
  4. Start talking.

Manage your Live chat with Gemini

Important: If your Gemini Apps Activity setting is on, transcripts of your Live chats are saved in your Gemini Apps Activity. We're gradually releasing an update that will also save your Live recordings, including audio as well as any video and screenshares you show Live, in your Gemini Apps Activity if it’s on. Learn how to manage & delete your Gemini Apps activity.

Put Live on hold & resume the Live chat
  • To put the Live chat on hold, tap Hold . This turns off the mic.
  • To resume the Live chat, tap Live .
Exit or resume a Live chat & review the transcript
  • To exit the Live chat and review the transcript, tap End .
  • To resume a previous Live chat, open the chat and tap Live .

Share your camera or screen with Live

Important: For now, the features below are available on any Android device with Gemini Advanced. Without Gemini Advanced, these features are being released gradually on Android devices, so they might not be available to you just yet. Learn how to upgrade to Gemini Advanced.

Share your camera in Live

In your Live chat, you can turn on your camera to show Gemini what you see and talk about it.

  • To share your camera on, tap Camera .
  • To stop sharing your camera, tap Camera .
  • To switch between your front and rear camera, tap Switch to rear or front camera .

When your camera automatically turns off

When your camera is on in a Live chat, the camera automatically turns off if:

  • Live is put on hold. If you continue your Live chat, the camera automatically turns back on.
  • You leave the Gemini mobile app. The camera doesn’t automatically turn back on when you return to the app.
  • Your screen locks. The camera doesn’t automatically turn back on when you unlock your screen.
Share your device’s screen in Live

Important: To share your screen, you must turn on notifications for Gemini Live on your device.

You can share and get help with what’s on your device’s screen. When you share your screen, your full screen is shared with Gemini.

Share your screen

There are 2 ways to share your device’s screen:

  • On the Live screen in the Gemini mobile app, tap Turn on screen sharing and follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Outside of the Gemini mobile app, open Gemini by saying “Hey Google” or by touch, and tap Share screen with Live and follow the onscreen instructions.
    • “Share screen with Live” might not be available when another feature is shown that’s more helpful.

Stop sharing your screen

There are 2 ways to stop sharing your screen:

  • Go back to the Gemini mobile app, then and tap Turn off screen sharing .
  • From the top edge of your screen, swipe down, then on the “Screen Sharing” card, tap Stop sharing.

When screen sharing automatically stops

When you’re sharing your screen, if Live is put on hold or you lock your screen, screen sharing automatically stops. Screen sharing doesn’t automatically resume when you continue your Live chat or unlock your screen. To resume it, you need to share your screen again.

Talk Live about files, images & YouTube videos

Talk about an image
  1. Open the Gemini mobile app .
    • You can also say 'Hey Google' if it’s on, or activate Gemini by touch.
  2. Tap Add files and then Gallery or Camera.
  3. Upload an image or take a photo.
  4. Tap Talk Live about this.
Talk about a video in the YouTube app

For any YouTube video up to 2 hours long, you can ask Gemini Live about anything that's mentioned in the captions of the video. This feature is available even if the YouTube app is disabled in Gemini.

  1. In the YouTube app, go to the video’s page.
  2. Say “Hey Google” or activate Gemini by touch.
  3. Tap Talk Live about this.
Talk about a file
  1. Open the Gemini mobile app .
    • You can also say 'Hey Google' if it’s on, or activate Gemini by touch.
  2. Tap Add files and then Files.
  3. Upload a supported file.
  4. Tap Talk Live about this.

Supported file types include:

  • Plain text files: TXT
  • Document files: DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF, HWP
Talk about a PDF in the Files by Google or Samsung Notes app

Important: For now, this feature works with PDFs that you open in the Files by Google and Samsung Notes apps only.

  1. Open a PDF file in a supported app.
  2. Say “Hey Google” or activate Gemini by touch.
  3. Tap Talk Live about this.

Tip: You can activate Gemini by saying ‘Hey Google’ or by touch. Learn about the different ways to activate Gemini.

Use Live in the background

Talk to Gemini in the background

Important: To talk to Gemini in the background, you must turn on notifications for Gemini Live on your device.

You can use your phone and other apps while you’re Live with Gemini.

  • To put Live in the background: from the bottom edge of your screen, swipe up.
  • To go back to Live in fullscreen: from the top edge of your screen, swipe down and tap the “Live with Gemini” card.
Continue your Live chat on lock screen

Important: You can’t start Gemini Live on a locked screen. You need to unlock your phone to start it.

If Gemini on lock screen is on, you can continue your Live chat after you lock your phone. If Gemini on lock screen is off, when you lock your phone, Live is put on hold. Learn how to turn on Gemini on lock screen.

When you’re in a Live chat with your phone locked:

  • To go back to Live in fullscreen: on the lock screen, tap the Live with Gemini notification and unlock your phone.
  • To exit Live: on the lock screen, expand the “Live with Gemini” notification and tap End Live mode.

Tip: If your chat is put on hold or ends while your phone is locked, you’ll need to unlock your phone to continue the Live chat.

Manage settings

Change Gemini’s voice

Important: The option to change Gemini’s voice isn’t available in some languages. Learn how to change Gemini's display language.

This voice setting applies to all Gemini Apps features. It’s used in Gemini Live and features where Gemini Apps respond verbally, like when you tap Listen next to a response.

  1. Open your Gemini mobile app .
  2. At the top, tap your Profile picture or initial and then Settings and then Gemini’s Voice.
  3. To hear and select a voice, swipe left or right.
  4. Tap Select.
Turn Interrupt Live responses on or off

While Gemini is talking, you can interrupt it by talking. To turn this feature off:

  1. Open the Gemini mobile app .
  2. At the top, tap your Profile picture or initial and then Settings.
  3. Turn Interrupt Live responses on or off.

Tip: If you turn off interrupt Live responses, you can still interrupt Gemini by tapping the screen.

Turn on notifications for Gemini Live

To use Gemini Live in the background or while your device is locked, Live with Gemini notifications must be on.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications and then App notifications and then Google.
  3. Turn on All Google Notifications if it’s off.
  4. Turn on Live with Gemini if it’s off.
