Learn why Google Health app requires location services

The Google Health app needs to connect with your Fitbit device to sync your data, update your clock, and get local weather. Depending on your phone, this may require Location Services or Nearby Devices permissions.

If you don't want to share your location, you can turn off the location permission for the Google Health app on your phone.

Turn on your location

Android 12 and higher

You can sync your Android device without turning on GPS location and tracking.

  1. On your Android phone, open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps and then Health and then Permissions.
  3. Tap Nearby Devices and then Allow. This allows the app to find your watch through Bluetooth.

Optional: To get weather updates and GPS maps for your runs, under "App permissions," tap Location and then Allow all the time.

Android 11 and lower

Previous Android systems bundle Bluetooth scanning with Location services. For the app to find your device, you must turn on Location.

Manage persistent app location alerts

If your phone repeatedly asks to access your location, check your phone's settings. The battery saver mode might be blocking the connection.

To turn off battery saver mode:

  1. On your Android phone, open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery and then Battery Saver.
  3. Turn off Use Battery Saver.
  4. To return to your home screen, tap the arrow.
  5. Restart your phone and your Fitbit device.

Tips:

  • If the previous steps don’t resolve the issue, repeat them and turn off Adaptive Battery on the Battery Saver screen.
  • Charging your phone may not be enough to stop persistent app location alerts. To fix this, you must manually turn off Battery Saver.
