To help reduce distractions at night or during school hours, you can set your child’s device to have limited apps available. You can set weekly schedules and select whether unlimited time apps are also allowed during downtime and school time.
Important:
- On devices with Android 7 and up, you can use Downtime and School time.
- You can allow Unlimited Apps during School time and Downtime.
- Your child’s notifications, such as notifications for calls and texts, will be silent during School time.
- Your child can call and text during School time.
- Downtime: For your child to text during Downtime, your child’s messages app must be an unlimited app. Calls are always available.
- For devices with Android 14 and up or WearOS 5 and up, you can manage who your child can call and text. Learn how to set up your child’s contacts.
- You can't place app time limits on system apps. Learn how to set app time limits on your child’s device.
To go to the child's account settings that you last visited in the Family Link app, tap the button below:
Set scheduleSet up Downtime or School time for the first time
- Open the Family Link app

- At the top left, select your child.
- At the bottom left, tap Screen time

- Turn on Downtime or School time.
Change schedule for today
- Open the Family Link app
.
- At the top left, select your child.
- At the bottom left, tap Screen time
Schedules.
- Tap Downtime
Tonight.
- You can also tap School time
Today.
- You can also tap School time
- Select the Start time and End time.
- Tap Done.
Edit weekly schedule
- Open the Family Link app
.
- At the top left, select your child.
- At the bottom left, tap Screen time
Schedules.
- Under “Downtime” or “School time,” tap Weekly schedule.
- Select the days you want to set a schedule for.
- Select the Start time and End time.
- Tap Done.
- To turn on “Unlimited Apps” when a schedule is set, tap Allowed Apps.
- If you don't have any Unlimited Apps:
- Tap Select Apps.
- Change apps you want available during school time to “Unlimited Time.”
- If you already have Unlimited Apps:
- Turn on Unlimited Apps.
- To add or remove Unlimited Apps, tap View app list.
Tip: To apply limits on all days of the week, tap Apply to all days of the week
Done.
Add a School time break
- On your device, open Family Link
.
- Select your child.
- At the bottom left, tap Screen time
Schedules
School time.
- Tap Weekly schedule.
- Select a day.
- Tap Break.
- Select the Start time and End time.
- To apply break for the whole week, select Apply Monday-Friday.
- Tap Done.
Delete a School time break
- On your device, open Family Link
.
- Select your child.
- At the bottom left, tap Screen time
Schedules
School time.
- Tap Weekly schedule.
- Select a day.
- Tap Break
Delete break
Done.
Tip: If your child’s watch has connectivity, changes will take effect immediately on their device.
With your child's device
- On your child's device, open Settings
.
- On Android versions 8.1 (O) and up, tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- On other Android versions:
- Tap Google
All services.
- Under "Kids & family," tap Parental controls.
- Tap Google
- To find the current settings, tap Downtime or School time.
- To edit "Downtime" or "School time" settings, sign in or use your Parent Access Code to verify that you're a parent.
Give your child bonus time
You can let your child spend more time on their device for the day without changing their daily limit or downtime, school time schedule. You can add bonus time while your child’s Android device is locked or soon to be locked.
- Open the Family Link app

- At the top left, select your child.
- At the bottom left, tap Screen time
.
- Below your child’s device name, tap Bonus time
.
- Set the amount of bonus time.
- To increase bonus time, select
.
- To decrease the bonus time, select
.
- To set a specific time, tap the number.
- To increase bonus time, select
- Tap Done.
Tip: To give more bonus time or remove the bonus time, tap Bonus time again.
