Set up your child’s contacts

To get your child’s contact list ready, you can create new contacts or add contacts from your contact list. You can choose whether or not your child can call and text numbers that aren’t in their contacts. Contact limitations only apply to communications through certain apps including Google Messages, Samsung Messages (smartwatches only), and Google Dialer.

The contacts your child can call and text apply to all of their current and future devices that support the feature.

Supported devices & apps

Devices
  • Smartwatches with Wear OS 5 and up.
  • Android phones with Android 14 and up.
Phone calls
Only traditional phone calls are supported by the feature.
Messages

Important:

  • Texts sent via Rich Business Messaging or to email addresses won’t work on Google Messages when contact limitation is turned on.
  • Some features including Google Messages may be limited on watches that are tethered to a phone. Supervised accounts will only be able to reply to incoming text messages.

Contact limitation for messages are only supported in Google Messages and Samsung Messages on watch. You can always block other apps through Family Link.

If your child has access to other apps like WhatsApp and Google Chat, they can still call and text numbers that aren’t in their parent-managed contacts, even if you limit contacts. Learn how to block other apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this impact group calls?

If the permission is set to "Only contacts I add," your child will only be able to call and start group calls with approved contacts.

But if your child calls someone that’s approved and that person includes another person that isn't approved, your child will be able to participate in that group call.

How does this impact voicemail?

If you set the permission to "Only contacts I add," anyone can still leave a voicemail on your child's phone number.

Can my child still call and text people on WhatsApp?

If your child has access to WhatsApp or other messaging apps aside from Google Messages and Samsung Messages, they can use those apps to call and text numbers that aren’t in their approved contacts.

How does this affect group chats?

For the child to participate in a group chat, all numbers in the chat must be approved contacts. If there are unsaved numbers when they’re added to a group chat, your child can send you a request to approve all unsaved numbers.

Can my child still make emergency calls and texts?

This doesn’t affect emergency services. Your child can text or call their emergency contacts if they are added as approved contacts. Learn how to get help during an emergency.

Tip: Each device’s manufacturer has their own way to control emergency contacts.

Why can’t I change the default apps?

When contact limitation is applied, changing the default apps will require parent permission. To change default apps when contact limitation is on:

  1. On your Android device, open Family Link Family Link.
  2. Select your child and then Screen time.
  3. Select your child’s device.
  4. Turn on Change default apps.
  5. From your child’s device, open Device settings and then Default apps.

Tip: When you turn this setting on, your child can change default apps. If your child changes their default communication apps, the contacts, call, and text settings you chose may not work anymore.
