Use Deep Research in Gemini in Workspace apps

You can conduct in-depth and real-time research on most subjects with Deep Research in Gemini in Workspace. You can change or add other sources, like your personal Gmail or Drive, for your research.

Start a Deep Research report

Start a Deep Research report in Chat
  1. In Google Chat, open Ask Gemini .
  2. At the bottom, in the text box, enter a question or prompt that explains what you want to research. For example:
    • "Use Deep Research to examine current renewable energy trends and compare them with my project drafts in Drive."
    • “Use Deep Research to recommend restaurants, attractions, and activities for my upcoming 7-day trip to Oslo, Norway.”
  3. Click Send message .
Start a Deep Research report in Docs, Drive, Gmail, Sheets, or Slides
  1. On your computer, open a Google Workspace app, like Gmail or Docs.
  2. On the right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. At the bottom, click Tools and then Deep Research.
  4. In the text box, enter a question or prompt that explains what you want to research. For example:
    • "Research current renewable energy trends and compare them with my project drafts in Drive."
    • “Find recommended restaurants, attractions, and activities for my upcoming 7-day trip to Oslo, Norway.”
  5. Click Submit .

Set up the Deep Report report

Step 1: Add sources & review your research plan

After you submit your prompt, you can choose sources to help inform your research.

  1. In the sources card, select one or more options:
    • Drive: Analyze files and folders in your Google Drive.
    • Gmail: Include info from your emails.
    • Chat: Include info from your chat messages.
    • Web: Search the public web for the latest info.
  2. Optional for Docs, Drive, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides: To choose specific sources for your research, click Add sources and select files from your Drive.
  3. Click Next.
    • Gemini creates a research plan for your topic.
    • To update the research plan before you create a report, click Customize.
  4. Click Start research.
Step 2: Track your research
  • While you work, Gemini researches your topic based on the plan.
  • It can take some time to generate your report since Gemini analyzes many sources.
  • You can close Gemini, start a new chat, or switch to a different Workspace document. The research task continues to run in the background.
  • When the research is complete:
    • Gemini generates the report in a Google Doc.
    • You get an email about your plan’s completion.
Step 3: Open your report
  1. In your conversation with Gemini, click Open Doc.
    • A new Google Doc opens in a new tab.
    • It includes the findings, citations, and an organized summary of the data found.
    • The report automatically saves to your Drive.
  2. In the document, ask Gemini follow-up questions about the report.
    • You can also ask Gemini to refine specific sections.

Find your Deep Research reports

Find your Deep Research reports in Chat
  1. In Google Chat, open Ask Gemini .
  2. Under “Recent,” select your research conversation.
    • To find more conversations, click Show more.

  1. On your computer, open a Google Workspace app, like Gmail or Docs.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. At the top left, click More options .
  4. Under "History," find your research conversation.
    • To find more conversations, click View all.

Tips:

  • Your conversations are organized by date, with the most recent at the top.
  • You can also find your research reports at drive.google.com.
