Manage tabs in Chrome

You can open multiple tabs in Chrome. You can also check and switch between all your tabs. When you open a new tab, Chrome opens a personalized New Tab page.

Common actions with tabs

Perform basic actions when you search the web on Chrome.

Open a new tab
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. At the top right, tap More and then New tab New tab.

Tip: At the top of your Chrome window, you can also open a new tab when you tap New tab New tab .

Open an inactive tab or tab group

If you haven't used a tab or tab group for 14 days or more, it moves to the “Inactive tabs” section. You can easily access and restore the inactive tabs and tab groups to the main tab switcher whenever you want to use them again.

To manage your inactive tabs and tab groups:

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. On the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs and then Inactive tabs.
    • At the top of the tab grid, you can find inactive tabs and tab groups.
  3. To open, tap the tab or tab group.

Tip: When a tab becomes active again, the active tab count will be updated.

Pin a tab

You can pin your favorite sites for easy access later.

Pin from the tab strip

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To pin a single or multiple tab:
    • To pin a single tab:
      • Touch and hold the tab you want to pin. Or, you can:
        • With a mouse: Right-click on the tab you want to pin.
        • With a keyboard: Press Shift + F10.
    • To pin multiple tabs: Select the tabs you want to pin.
      • With a mouse and keyboard:
        1. To select multiple tabs, on your keyboard:
          • Press Ctrl while you select the tabs with your mouse.
          • Press Shift while you select the tabs with your mouse.
        2. To open the menu, right-click on any selected tab.
        3. Select Pin tabs.
      • With a keyboard only:
        1. To select multiple tabs:
          • To focus the tab strip: Press F6.
          • To cycle through the tabs in the tab strip: Press Tab or Shift + Tab.
          • To select the focused tab: Press Ctrl + Shift + H.
        2. To open the menu, press Shift + F10.
        3. Select Pin tabs.
  3. On the menu, select Pin tab.

Pin a tab within a group

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Open a tab group.
  3. Touch and hold the tab you want to pin. Or, you can:
    • With a mouse: Right-click on the tab you want to pin.
    • With a keyboard: Press Shift + F10.
  4. On the menu, select Pin tab.
    • The newly pinned tab is removed from its group and moves to the left side of the tab strip.
    • If the pinned tab is the last tab, the group closes.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. To pin a single or multiple tab:
    • To pin a single tab:
      1. Touch and hold the tab you want to pin. Or, you can:
        • With a mouse: Right-click on the tab you want to pin.
        • With a keyboard: Press Shift + F10.
      2. Select Pin tab.
    • To pin multiple tabs: Select the tabs you want to pin.
      • With a mouse and keyboard:
        1. To select multiple tabs, on your keyboard:
          • Press Ctrl while you select the tabs with your mouse.
          • Press Shift while you select the tabs with your mouse.
        2. To open the menu, right-click on any selected tab.
        3. Select Pin tabs.
      • With a keyboard only:
        1. To select multiple tabs:
          • To focus the tab strip: Press F6.
          • To cycle through the tabs in the tab strip: Press Tab or Shift + Tab.
          • To select the focused tab: Press Ctrl + Shift + H.
        2. To open the menu, press Shift + F10.
        3. Select Pin tabs.
  4. Select Select tab.
    1. Select the tabs you want to pin.
    2. At the top right, select Menu and then Pin tabs.

Tips:

  • Pinned tabs are on the left most side of the tab strip. They don’t move even if you scroll unpinned tabs.
  • You can’t pin tab groups.
  • You can’t pin tabs through drag-and-drop.
Reorder a pinned tab
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. Drag the tab you want to reorder.

Tip: On an Android tablet, if you drag a pinned tab out of the current window, it creates a new window. The tab remains pinned in the new window.

Unpin a tab

Unpin from the tab strip

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To unpin a single or multiple tab:
    • To unpin a single tab:
      • Touch and hold the pinned tab you want to unpin. Or, you can:
        1. With a mouse: Right-click on the tab you want to unpin.
        2. With a keyboard: Press Shift + F10.
    • To unpin multiple tabs: Select the tabs you want to pin.
      • With a mouse and keyboard:
        1. To select multiple tabs, on your keyboard:
          • Press Ctrl while you select the tabs with your mouse.
          • Press Shift while you select the tabs with your mouse.
        2. To open the menu, right-click on any selected tab.
        3. Select Unpin tabs.
      • With a keyboard only:
        1. To select multiple tabs:
          • To focus the tab strip: Press F6.
          • To cycle through the tabs in the tab strip: Press Tab or Shift + Tab.

Close a pinned tab

Close from the tab strip

  2. To close a single or multiple tab:

      • Touch and hold the tab you want to close. Or, you can:
        1. With a mouse: Right-click on the tab you want to close.
        2. With a keyboard: Press Shift + F10.
    • To close multiple tabs: Select the tabs you want to close.
      • With a mouse and keyboard:
        1. To select multiple tabs, on your keyboard:
          • Press Ctrl while you select the tabs with your mouse.
          • Press Shift while you select the tabs with your mouse.
        2. To open the menu, right-click on any selected tab.
        3. Select Close tabs.

Close from the tab switcher

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.

    1. Select the tabs you want to close.
    2. At the top right, select Menu and then Close tabs.
Close a tab
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs. Any open tabs will appear.
  3. At the top right of the tab you want to close, tap Close Close. You can also swipe to close the tab.
Close all tabs
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs. Any open tabs will appear.
  3. Tap More and then Close all tabs.
Close all inactive tabs
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. On the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs and then Inactive tabs.
    • At the top of the tab grid, you can find your inactive tabs.
  3. At the bottom, tap Close all inactive tabs and then Close all.

Manage inactive tabs
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap More and then Settings Settings.
  3. Under "Advanced," tap Tabs and tab groups and then Move to inactive section.
  4. To hide inactive tabs and tab groups automatically, select the time period.
    • To never hide inactive tabs and tab groups, tap Never.

Tips:

  • In the “Inactive” section, tabs and tab groups are automatically closed after 6 months. Synced tab groups are closed but not deleted.
    • If you don’t want to close inactive tabs after 6 months, turn off Automatically close inactive items.
  • To access the settings page within "Inactive tabs," at the top right, tap More and then Settings.
  • To access tabs and groups from other devices, under “Tabs and tab groups,” turn on Automatically open tab groups from other devices.
Switch to a new tab
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs. Any open tabs will appear.
  3. Swipe to the tab you want and tap it.
Reorder tabs
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. Touch and hold the tab you want to move.
  4. Drag the tab to a different position.
Group your tabs

Important: When you create or edit a tab group, Chrome automatically saves and syncs changes across devices where you're signed in with the same Google Account.

From the context menu

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To add to a pre-existing tab group, open the tab you want.
  3. At the top right, tap More and then Add tab to group .
    • If you don’t have any tab groups, select Add tab to new group.
  4. From the list, select the tab group where you want the tab to go.

From the tab switcher

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
    • To create a tab group, use drag and drop:
      1. Touch and hold a tab.
      2. Pull over another tab or tab group you want to group it with.
      3. Enter the tab group name.
      4. Select the tab group color.
      5. Tap Done.
    • To add a tab to an existing tab group, use drag and drop:
      1. Touch and hold a tab.
      2. Pull over another tab or tab group you want to group it with.
    • To create a tab group, use Add tab group:
      1. Tap Tab groups Grid view.
      2. At the top left, tap New tab group New tab.
      3. Enter the tab group name.
      4. Select the tab group color.
      5. Tap Done.
    • To create a tab group, use the tab context menu:
      1. Tap More and then New tab group.
      2. Enter the tab group name.
      3. Select the tab group color.
      4. Tap Done.
    • To add a tab to an existing tab group, use the tab context menu:
      1. Tap More and then Add tab to group .
      2. From the list, select the tab group where you want the tab to go.
      3. Tap Done.
Organize your tab groups
Important: You can organize your tabs with groups. When you create or edit a tab group, changes are automatically saved and synced across devices where you're signed in with the same Google Account.
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
  2. Tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
    • To merge tab groups:
      1. Touch and hold, then drag a tab into a group you want to merge it with.
        • This action can delete the dragged tab group across devices.
    • To edit a tab group:
      • To change the tab color:
        1. Tap the tab group.
        2. On the left of the tab group name, tap the color.
        3. Select the color of the tab group.
      • To rename the tab group:
        1. Tap the tab group.
        2. To rename, select the title.
        3. Enter the new tab group name.
    • To find tabs in a group: Select a group.
    • To remove a tab from a group:
      1. Tap the tab group.
      2. Touch and hold the tab you want to remove.
      3. Drag the tab to the "Remove from group" area at the bottom of your screen.
    • To close a tab group:
      1. Touch and hold a tab group or tap More .
      2. Tap Close group.
        • A closed group isn't deleted and is saved in the bookmarks bar or in the menu. You can re-open a closed group again.
    • To close all tab groups:
      1. At the top right, tap More .
      2. From the dropdown, tap Close all tabs.
      3. To confirm, tap Close all tabs and groups.
    • To open or re-open a tab group:
      1. Tap Tab groups Grid view.
      2. Under “Tab Groups,” select the name of the tab group you want to open or re-open.

Tips:

  • To open a link in a new tab in a group, touch and hold the link, then tap Open in new tab in group.
  • To keep tab groups from automatically syncing across your devices, tap Settings and then Sync, and then uncheck Open Tabs.
  • By default, tabs and tab groups are automatically open from other devices. To turn off:
    1. Tap Settings and then Tabs and tab groups.
    2. Under “Tabs and tab groups,” turn off Automatically open tab groups from other devices.
  • On your Android tablet:
    • To add a tab into an existing tab group in the tab strip, drag the tab into the group.
    • To remove a tab from a tab group in the tab strip, drag the tab out of the group.
Delete a tab group

Important: When you delete a tab group, it’ll be removed on your device and other devices that use the same Google Account.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. Touch and hold a tab group or tap More .
  4. Tap Delete group.
  5. To confirm, tap Delete group.

You can also:

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap Switch tabs Switch tabs and then Grid Grid view.
  3. Select the tab group name you want to delete.
  4. Tap Delete.
  5. To confirm, tap Delete group.
Open a link in a tab group
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Navigate to a link you want to open.
  3. Touch and hold the link.
  4. Tap Open in new tab in group.
Reload tabs
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More and then Reload Reload.
Search your tabs
You can find your opened tabs in the tab switcher. If you have several open tabs, you can search your tabs.
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Next to the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. On the "Search your tabs" field, enter the tab name you want to find.
    • Other than your open tabs, you can also find your:
      • Recently closed tabs
      • Other devices tabs
      • Search suggestions
        • When you tap a search suggestion, the suggestion opens as a search result in Google Search.
        • If your search doesn’t have an exact match, suggestions will display.
  4. On your keyboard, to find results, tap Enter.
  5. Tap the tab you want to open.

Tips:

  • You can search and select a tab from your other devices.
  • In Incognito mode, you can also search tabs on your Incognito tabs.
  • Before you type a tab name, you can find your last 5 opened tabs as suggestions.
  • If no results are found, you can find search suggestions.

Perform bulk actions on tabs

You can perform bulk actions when you tap More or when you touch and hold tabs.

Close tabs
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. Tap More and then Select tabs.
  4. Select the tabs you want to close.
  5. Tap More and then Close tabs.
Group tabs
Important: When you create or edit a tab group, changes are automatically saved and synced across devices where you're signed in with the same Google Account.
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. Touch and hold any tab or tap More .
  4. Tap Select tabs.
  5. Choose the tabs you want to group.
  6. Tap More and then Group tabs.
Ungroup tabs
Important: When you ungroup tabs, it leaves the tabs open on your device. However, it also deletes the group on your device and other devices that use the same Google Account.
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. Open a tab group containing the tabs you want to ungroup.
  4. Touch and hold any tab, or tap More and then Select tabs.
  5. Choose the tabs you want to ungroup.
  6. Tap More and then Ungroup tabs.
Close tabs in a group
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs .
  3. Open a tab group containing the tabs you want to close.
  4. Tap More and then Select tabs.
  5. Select the tabs you want to delete from the group.
  6. Tap More and then Close tabs.
Share tabs
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. Touch and hold any tab, or tap More and then Select tabs.
  4. Choose the tabs you want to share.
  5. Tap More and then Share tabs.
  6. Choose where you want to share.
Share tabs in a group
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs .
  3. Open a tab group containing the tabs you want.
  4. Tap Select tabs.
  5. Choose the tabs you want to share.
  6. Tap More and then Share tabs.
Bookmark tabs
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome .
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. Touch and hold any tab, or tap More and then Select tabs.
  4. Choose the tabs you want to bookmark.
  5. Tap More and then Bookmark tabs.

Manage windows on your Android tablet in Chrome

On your Android tablet, you can open multiple windows and move tabs from one window to another.
Open a new window
  1. On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap More and then New window.
Tips:
  • You can also open a new window under “Manage windows.” Learn how to manage active and inactive windows.
  • If you can’t find your other Chrome windows, under “Manage windows,” check if the missing window is in the “Inactive” tab.
  • If you can't open a new Chrome window, check if you have exceeded the window limit. If yes, close some old ones to open a new one.
Move a tab to another window

Move a tab from the menu

  1. On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. In the tab group you want to move, touch and hold the tab.
    • If you use a mouse or trackpad, right-click the tab.
  3. Tap Move group to another window.
  4. Select the window you want to move the tab to.
  5. Tap Move.

Move a tab by drag and drop

  1. On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. In the tab you want to move, touch and hold, then drag it to the other window.
    • You can drop the tab in the tab strip, tab switcher, or over site content of the other window.

Tip: When you drag a tab over site content, the site content will be replaced by the contents of that tab.

Move a tab group to another window
  1. On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. In the tab group you want to move, touch and hold the tab.
    • If you use a mouse or trackpad, right-click the tab.
  3. Tap Move group to another window.
  4. Select the window you want to move the tab to.
  5. Tap Move.
Restore an inactive window

Windows that you haven’t used frequently may go to the “Inactive” window.

  1. On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap More and then Manage windows and then Inactive.
  3. Select an inactive window that you want to restore.
  4. Tap Restore.

Tip: If you can’t restore a window, you’ve already exceeded the window limit. To restore a window, close an active window.

Manage your active and inactive windows
  1. On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap More and then Manage windows.
    • Under “Active,” you can:
      • Find your recently opened windows.
      • Add a new window. Tap New window .
    • Under “Inactive,” you can find your inactive windows.
Enter split screen mode

To open a new window and trigger split screen:

  1. On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To open a tab in a new window, touch and hold, then drag and drop it to the edge of your screen.
Switch windows
  1. On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap More and then Manage windows.
  3. Tap the window you want to open and then Open.
Close a window
  1. On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap More and then Manage windows and then Menu of the window .
  3. Tap Close Close.

Tip: When you close a window, it doesn’t move to the inactive tab and you can't restore it.

Search your tabs

You can find your opened tabs in the tab switcher. If you have several open tabs, you can search your tabs.

  1. On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Next to the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
  3. On the upper right, tap Search .
  4. On the "Search your tabs" field, enter the tab name you want to find.
    • Other than your open tabs, you can also find your:
      • Recently closed tabs
      • Other devices tabs
      • Search suggestions
        • When you tap a search suggestion, the keyword opens as a search result in Google Search.
        • If your search doesn’t have an exact match, suggestions will display.
  5. On your keyboard, to find results, tap Enter.
  6. Tap the tab you want to open.

Tips:
