Use talk to type in Chrome

You can use talk to type on your desktop device to create and refine text on the web using your voice instead of typing. Powered by Gemini, Chrome can transform your spoken words into formatted text in any input field within Chrome. Talk to type automatically cleans up speech, adds punctuation, and applies appropriate styling. It also supports simple voice instructions on how text should be written and formatted.

Use talk to type

To use talk to type:

Start talk to type

First, click inside the box where you want to type. This can be any text box on the web or Gemini in Chrome on your desktop device.

Next, pick one of these two ways to start:

  • Use the right-click menu:
    1. Right-click in any text box.
    2. Select Talk to Type from the menu.
  • Use a keyboard shortcut:
    1. On macOS: Select Option + Space.
    2. On Chrome OS and Windows: Select Ctrl + Space.

Note: The first time you use talk to type, you have to use the right-click menu. After your first use, you can open it by right-clicking again or by using the keyboard shortcut.

Tips:

  • When talk to type is active, an action bar appears with a waveform visual to show your voice is being detected and processed.
  • Switching to another tab stops talk to type from listening. Anything you already said will be written into the original text box.

Complete voice input

To finish your voice input:

  • Select the Done button in the action bar.
  • Alternatively, press the hotkey you used to activate talk to type again.

Add to or update existing text

You can add new spoken content to an input field that already contains text. You can also change text that you’ve already input.

To add text:

  1. Put your cursor where you want to add text.
  2. Activate Talk to Type.
  3. Talk to type adds your new content at the cursor position.

To change text:

  1. Highlight the text you wish to modify.
  2. Activate Talk to Type.
  3. Say what you want to replace the text with or how to change it. For example, you can say: "make this sound more professional," "turn this into a bulleted list," "make this more formal," or "summarize this." Talk to type will process what you say and update the highlighted text.
    1. Text changes with talk to type are not yet available on Google Workspace apps.

Understand privacy and data

Your privacy is important. When you use talk to type for the first time, you must opt in to the tool. When you see the prompt:

  • Review how talk to type works and handles data.
  • Provide your consent for data sharing before the feature can be activated.

When you use talk to type, Chrome collects your voice recording, typed words, and page details to help rewrite and polish your text.
