Current ChromeOS updates

  • Manage USB printers in ChromeOS back to top

Previously, admins could manage printers connected to ChromeOS over a network connection only. This new feature provides a way for managing printers connected to a ChromeOS device via the USB port. ChromeOS administrators can now specify the Vendor ID and Product ID of the USB printers to manage them for their organizations.

For more information, see Manage local and network printers.

  • Pre-configured print settings back to top

Starting from ChromeOS 143, admins can pre-configure or limit print options per printer. The functionality applies to the paper size, paper type, duplex, color, DPI, print quality, and print as Image settings. Pre-configuring print settings helps to optimize workflows in domains like healthcare, retail, or logistics. A recurring example are label printers with a specific label size - by pre-setting the paper size, admins can save users the hassle of going through a manual configuration.

For more information, see Manage local and network printers.

  • Preload Google Vids on ChromeOS for managed users back to top

Google Vids, an AI-powered video creation app for work, is now pre-installed for managed users. You can use Google Vids to create, write, produce, edit, collaborate, and share your videos.

Managed users can find Google Vids in the ChromeOS Launcher. For more information, see Google Vids helps scale your message through video storytelling

  • Kana-Romaji switch on ChromeOS virtual keyboard back to top

ChromeOS 143 adds a switch between Kana and Romaji input modes to the virtual keyboard UI, when Japanese input language is chosen. This enhancement allows users to switch the layouts in kiosk mode, when opening virtual keyboard settings is not possible.

Upcoming ChromeOS changes

  • Badge authentication enhancements back to top

ChromeOS has added badge authentication functionality to ChromeOS user sessions. Users can simply start a session with a badge tap, and leave the session with another badge tap. The solution is focused on frontline workers in various industries including retail, hospitality, and manufacturing. From ChromeOS 145, we will enhance this functionality through support for tap to screen unlock and tap over use cases, and support for WebHID+SDK based readers.

For more information, see Set up badge-based authentication.
