For administrators who manage ChromeOS devices for a business or school.
If your organization has not set up Single Sign On (SSO) or if you want to reduce the initial setup effort, you can allow the enhanced Microsoft 365 functionality for your users without preconfiguring it. Users will be able to activate the functionality when needed after an additional sign-in.
Manual Microsoft 365 configuration is recommended for users who only edit documents occasionally in Office for the web in Microsoft 365.
Switch to manual Microsoft 365 configuration
First, set up the default configuration for Microsoft 365 automatic configuration, described in Preconfigure Office for the web in Microsoft 365 for your users. Then, follow these steps to switch to manual Microsoft 365 configuration:
Step 1: Allow users to configure OneDrive
OneDrive is required to open and edit files using Office for the web in Microsoft 365. By default, for enterprise users, the Microsoft OneDrive integration setting is set to Disable Microsoft OneDrive Files app integration—OneDrive integration into the Files app is turned off and users can't turn it on to set up Microsoft OneDrive on their devices.
Follow these steps to let users set up Microsoft OneDrive integration. And, if needed, you can limit Microsoft OneDrive to specific Entra ID accounts.
-
Sign in with an administrator account to the Google Admin console.
If you aren’t using an administrator account, you can’t access the Admin console.
-
Go to Menu
Devices > Chrome > Settings. The User & browser settings page opens by default.
Requires having the Mobile Device Management administrator privilege.
If you signed up for Chrome Enterprise Core, go to Menu
Chrome browser > Settings.
- To apply the setting to all users, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit.
- Go to Content.
- Click Microsoft OneDrive integration.
- Configure OneDrive integration into the Files app. Choose Allow users to set up Microsoft OneDrive integration.
For users who are signed into a managed user session on a ChromeOS device, OneDrive is integrated into the Files app only if they perform an activity that triggers OneDrive integration. For example, when the user opens an Office document in the Files app, activates OneDrive in the Files app, or activates OneDrive in Settings.- Note: As part of the integration, users might be required to authenticate with Microsoft Entra ID.
- (Optional) For manual Microsoft configuration, you can optimally limit accounts that can be used for the Microsoft OneDrive integration.
For example, enter common to also allow personal Microsoft accounts, which are blocked by default. Or, enter organizations or consumers. For information about endpoints, see Microsoft documentation.
Alternatively, enter your Microsoft domain name. Enter no more than one identifier. - Click Save.
Step 2: Allow users to configure Microsoft 365 Office document handling
-
- Click Microsoft Office documents.
- Download Office documents without first opening them in the basic editor.
- Select Preview off (recommended): Download Office documents directly.
- Click Save.
- Configure the cloud upload flow for Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft 365. Choose Microsoft 365: Allow user to enable Microsoft OneDrive upload and Microsoft 365 PWA file handling.
This reflects the consumer behavior described in Open & edit Office files on your Chromebook. Users can set up the cloud upload flow for Microsoft OneDrive and the optimized Office for the web experience if they want to. After setup, by default, files with matching file formats are moved to Microsoft OneDrive and handled by one of the Microsoft 365 PWA when users open them. - Click Save.
