You can hide or delete a conversation between you and another person in Google Chat and Chat in Gmail.
- Hide a 1:1 direct message
- Hides your copy of a conversation, but doesn't remove the conversation for other participants.
- If you hide a conversation with someone and then message them again, the conversation chat history shows up again.
- Delete a 1:1 direct message
- Permanently hides the conversation history from your view. The content remains visible to the other participant.
You can also choose to edit or delete a specific message. If you edit or delete a sent message, it updates the message for you and other participants in the conversation.
Hide a conversation or space
You can hide a 1:1 direct message, a group direct message, or a space.
- On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
- Hover over the 1:1 or group direct message name.
- Click Options

- On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
- Hover over the Space name.
- Click Options
Delete a 1:1 direct message
Important: You can’t delete a group direct message with more than 2 participants.
- On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
- Hover over the person's name.
- Click More

- To confirm, click Delete.
