Edit or delete a message in Google Chat

Important: This page provides instructions on how to edit or delete messages in Google Chat. To learn how to do this in Google Messages, go to Update an RCS sent message in the Google Messages Help Center.

If you make a mistake or need to update a message, you can edit or delete the message.

When you edit a message:

  • You can’t go back to the previous edit or the original message.
  • Chat notifications may include the original message.

When you delete a message:

  • The message is permanently removed from your Google Account and can’t be recovered.
  • You can’t undo the message deletion.

Edit a sent message

  1. On your Android device, go to Google Chat.
  2. Open a conversation, such as a direct message, group direct message, or space.
  3. Touch and hold the message you want to edit.
  4. Tap Edit.
  5. Make your changes.
  6. Tap Send .

Delete a sent message

  1. On your Android device, go to Google Chat.
  2. Open a conversation, such as a direct message, group direct message, or space.
  3. Touch and hold the message you want to delete.
  4. Tap Delete.
    • To find the “Delete” option in the pop-up menu, scroll to show all options.
  5. To confirm, tap Delete.

Learn why you can't edit or delete a message

  • You can delete messages from apps, but you can’t edit them.
  • If you use a personal account, you can’t delete messages when:
    • You’re in a space a different organization started.
    • You send a direct or group message to a Google Workspace account.
