Use Google Chat with a screen reader

You can send direct messages to an individual or multiple people with Google Chat. For ongoing conversations with a team, you can create a Space to message everyone at once.

If available, you can also use apps to automate your work. To use apps in Google Chat, you must use a work or school account and your Google Workspace administrator must give you permission to install apps.

Introduction

This article is divided into sections with headings. Use the links below to jump to a specific section of the article.

  • Press Shift + Down arrow to jump to recent conversations with unread messages.
  • Press Right arrow to open a conversation and move focus to the last message.
  • Press Enter to open the conversation and move focus to the reply box.

Navigate and read conversation lists

There are 4 sections in the Left navigation area that contain lists of conversations. Use the following shortcuts to navigate to the top of 3 of them:

  • Shortcuts (that includes Home): Press h then s.
    • Tip: Use h then h to navigate directly to the Home conversation list.

Getting started

Recommended browser and screen readers

Google Chat recommends Chrome and:

  • NVDA or JAWS on Windows
  • ChromeVox on ChromeOS
  • VoiceOver on MacOS

Use Chat as a web application

You can use chat.google.com as a web application rather than a webpage. When you use chat.google.com as a web application:

  • Turn off the screen reader web browsing shortcuts. For details, go to Set up your screen reader below.
  • Use Chat’s keyboard shortcuts to navigate and read instead of your screen reader’s commands. For details, go to Navigate around Chat below.

Tip: There are times when you should use chat.google.com as a web page and use screen reader browser commands. We point out these times as they occur.

Set up your screen reader

Some screen reader setup is required to use Chat as a web application:

  • JAWS: Turn off the Virtual cursor. Press Insert + z until you hear "off."
  • NVDA: Turn on focus mode. Press Insert + Spacebar until you hear a click sound like typing on a keyboard.
  • ChromeVox: Turn off sticky mode. Quickly press Search twice until you hear "sticky mode disabled."
  • VoiceOver: Turn off quick nav. Press Left + Right arrow until you hear "quicknav off."

Important: There are multiple references to the “reply box”, but when the edit field receives focus it is not called a reply box by your screen reader. A thread reply box is named “Reply” and the conversation reply box is named “History is on” or “History is off”. The name also tells you the state of History for that conversation.

Tip: If you use the JAWS Virtual cursor to review messages, confirm that your web verbosity setting for group boxes is not checked. Otherwise, you may hear “Start group,” “the message,” the contents of the message, “End group,” and then “the message” again.

Open Chat

Go to chat.google.com. When you open Chat, the keyboard focus is on a list of messages in the “Home” list inside the Main landmark. The first time you open Chat, you may want to explore it as a webpage as described in the next section. After you complete your exploration, we recommend you use Chat as a web application as described in Set up your screen reader above.

About the Chat interface

In Chat, there are 4 main areas:

  • Top, presented by your screen reader as a Banner landmark: Contains general settings and controls, such as your status, a search bar, and the Google bar to switch to other apps and user accounts.
  • Left navigation area, presented as a Navigation landmark: On the left, you can find headings for Shortcuts, Direct messages, Spaces, and Apps.
  • Chat content, presented as a Main landmark: Contains the most recent messages in the Home section, the currently selected Chat conversation, or Spaces content. This area also includes a list of past messages, a Message edit field for new messages, and action buttons.
    • This section can also include an additional pane containing the list of threads or the messages in a thread.
  • Right side panel, presented as a Complementary landmark: Provides embedded access to other Google products, like Calendar, Keep, Tasks, and Contacts.

Shortcuts

Shortcuts include 3 sections:

Home:

  • When you first open Chat, keyboard focus lands on the first message in the list of messages in the Home section.
  • The first messages in Chat or Spaces are likely the ones that you haven’t read yet and later messages in the list are older.
  • To open the focused message in the Direct message or Space, press the Right arrow.
    • To put focus on the reply box for the conversation, press Enter.
  • To return to the list of messages in Home, after you read or reply, use the browser back shortcut.
    • Note: Left arrow does not return to Home, it returns to the list containing the message.

Mentions:

  • This section has a list of most recent messages in Chat or Spaces that mention you using the at-sign.

Starred:

From the list of messages in any of the Shortcuts sections:

  • To navigate the section heading, press the Left arrow.
  • To navigate to the Mentions and Starred section headings, use the Down arrow.
  • To navigate to the list of messages in that section, press Enter or the Right arrow.

Tip: If focus doesn’t move to the list of messages from Home, Tab multiple times to the Unread switch, press Space to turn it off, then Tab to the list of messages.

Direct messages

Chats with one person or a group create a list of messages. By default, History is off and messages disappear 24 hours after they arrive. Spaces are for active long-term conversations with a team or group of people. History is on by default.

Spaces

While group chats can also be named, Spaces always have a group name assigned when they are created. The name is often descriptive of the group or purpose and is initialized with a set of participants. Once created, navigating the conversation is just like navigating messages in a Chat conversation.

Threads

Threads are side conversations that might distract from the larger group conversation. While rare in Direct messages with one other person, a thread can be created from any single message in a Chat or Spaces conversation.

Navigate around Main Chat content

Single letter keyboard shortcuts do not work when focus is in an edit field like the reply box. When you want to use a single letter shortcut and focus is in an edit field, press Escape.

  • When keyboard focus in a reply box: The Up arrow moves to the last posted message and allows you to edit and resend it.
  • When keyboard focus is not in a reply box:
    • Up arrow moves to older messages and down arrow moves to newer messages.
    • On a message, the Tab key navigates to buttons like: Add reaction (an emoji), Edit message (if you posted it), Mark as unread, and More actions.
    • In a Chat or Space conversation with Threads:
      • Move to older messages within the main conversation or within a thread with the Up arrow.
      • Move to newer messages within the main conversation or within a thread with the Down arrow.
      • Move to the oldest message in a thread in the thread panel with the Right arrow.
      • Move back to the message that started the thread in the main conversation with the Left arrow.

Basic navigation

Tab and Arrow keys work for basic navigation. For additional Chat navigation, you can use these commands:

  • In the Left navigation area for Chat:
    • Up or down arrow to select a Shortcut section, Direct message conversation, or Space.
    • Shift + Up or Down arrow to move to previous or next unread conversation.
    • Ctrl + Up or Down arrow to move between Shortcuts, Direct messages, or Spaces.
  • If focus is on a Chat or Space conversation:
    • Right arrow to move focus the oldest message in the conversation.
    • Enter to move focus to the edit field to add a message.
  • In the Main message area:
    • Use the Up or Down arrow to move within the messages.
    • Use the Left arrow to move to the Left navigation area.
    • Use the right arrow to move to the oldest message in a thread.
  • When focus is on a message in a Chat, Space, or Thread conversation:
    • Press Tab to links in a message, if present.
    • Next 3 Tabs go to the 3 most recent reactions for you to add.
    • Next 3 Tabs go to actions like: “Add reaction”, “Edit”, or “Reply in thread”.
    • Next Tab goes to “More actions” and may be followed by 0 or more of:
      • Current reactions to the message.
      • “Add reaction” button.
      • Who has viewed your message.
      • Thread replies.
      • Suggested replies.
    • Last Tab goes to the “Google Workspace tools” button. Press Shift + Tab multiple times to return to the message.
  • When focus is on the Message edit field:
    • Up arrow to edit the last message you sent.
    • Escape and then Up or Down arrow to go through all messages.
  • When focus is on a thread message: Left arrow to move the focus to the anchor message in the main conversation.

Advanced navigation

To improve your efficiency, use additional keyboard shortcuts.

Tip: With focus in a list of Direct messages, list of Spaces, list of Apps, or Home you can use the ‘u’ shortcut to toggle showing only unread contents.

Show a full list of keyboard shortcuts in Chat

  1. Turn off virtual cursor or browse mode in your screen reader.
  2. Press Escape if focus is on a Message edit field.
  3. Press the question key (Shift + Slash).

The first tab stop is a link you can activate to enable or disable some keyboard shortcuts. Make sure the link says Disable, so the extra keyboard shortcuts are available. When done, turn off virtual cursor or browse mode. To dismiss the dialog, press Escape.

Tip: For a complete list of shortcuts In a new browser tab, you can open Google Chat keyboard shortcuts.

Spaces are for active long-term conversations with a team or group of people. The membership of a Space may change over time as people join or leave the conversation.

  • If the message anchors a thread with unread replies, the beginning of the output is “<nn> unread” followed by the sender and message.

  • Every message in chat or space conversation the main thread can be the beginning of a thread.
  • Press Right arrow to open the thread panel and move focus to the last message.
