Ad categories taxonomy

This article describes how bidders can choose the taxonomy used in RTB for communicating ad categories.

Publishers block categories of creatives using a taxonomy defined by Google.

Bidders can choose to receive the blocked categories in the bid request and the detected categories in the Creatives API using the IAB Content 1.0 taxonomy (default) or the Google categories.

IAB Content 1.0 is an industry standard, but it’s subject to information loss due to a translation from the taxonomy the publisher uses. This can lead to increased bid filtering.

Google categories are not subject to any information loss and therefore may allow bidders to achieve lower rates of bid filtering.

Example

Google’s detected categories are mapped to the IAB content taxonomy (1.0) in the following manner.
Google category

IAB content taxonomy (1.0)
