New on Android: Explore, connect and play with new features for Android and Wear OS

Hi Android community,

Android is continuously introducing new features to make your devices more helpful, expressive and secure. We are introducing these throughout the year, within regular updates, to ensure your devices keep improving. From your phone to your smartwatch, and from messaging to security and beyond, here’s what’s new!

Get more done on the go

  • Reading practice helps new readers improve their vocabulary and comprehension skills using their Android phones and/or tablets with thousands of compatible children's ebooks on Google Play Books. [1]
  • Three new widgets will now help you quickly personalize your phone or tablet home screen with entertainment suggestions from Google TV, stock tracking from Google Finance and curated daily news headlines from Google News. [2]
  • With the new Google Keep single note tile for Wear OS, you can add a shortcut for fast access to a selected note or to-do list on your watch. [3]
  • With Spotify for Wear OS, you can listen to your Spotify favorites from your smartwatch with three new tiles for DJ, podcasts and heavy rotation. [4]
  • Fast Pair for Matter helps you quickly detect and securely set up any Matter-enabled device from your Android phone or tablet. Once your Android detects a new, compatible smart home device (from any brand) nearby, simply tap on the prompts to easily connect your device to your home network. [5]

Explore the world around you

  • Use your watch as a ticket and skip the ticket line! Commuters in the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, D.C. can now import SmarTrip® and Clipper® cards to Google Wallet to tap and ride via smartwatch. [6]
  • Shorts in YouTube playlists give you even more ways to save and curate the content you discover to watch again later.

Play it safe

  • Dark web report scans to see if your Gmail address has been leaked on the dark web — a hidden part of the internet where criminal activities often take place — and provides guidance on what actions to take. Now available to most users with a Google Account in the U.S. [7]

Share more of what you like

  • Nearby Share is now compatible with Windows PCs (in beta), so you can securely send and receive photos, videos, documents, audio files or entire folders between Android devices [8] and Windows PCs [9] within reach [10] — even when you don’t have an internet connection. [11]
  • Emoji Kitchen lets you remix your favorite emoji into stickers that you can send via Gboard. Now you can take a bite 🦈 of new aquatic-themed 🐬🐋  emoji combinations that will help you add a little sunshine to your conversations. [12]
  • Turn on RCS in Messages by Google to share high resolution photos and videos, message over Wi-Fi, see typing indicators and read receipts, and enhance security with end-to-end encryption. [13]
