Set up trusted places on your Android device

You can set up trusted places to quickly and easily access certain functions on your Android device when you're in or near a saved location.

When you're at or near a trusted place, you can:

What you need

To get the full benefits of trusted places, you'll need:

Add trusted places

Important:

  • The location of your trusted place is an estimate.
  • The boundaries of a trusted place can go out beyond the walls of your home or custom place. The accuracy of trusted places is about 100 metres.
  • Location signals can be copied or manipulated.

You can add trusted places from suggestions, manually enter them or choose a place from maps.

If you have other devices, set up trusted places on those devices separately.

Tip: You can also access trusted places through Extend Unlock and Identity Check.

  2. Tap Location and then Location Services and then Trusted places.
  3. Enter your biometrics or PIN.

  5. To confirm your decision, in the warning notification, tap Delete anyway.

Check and edit settings that use trusted places

Important: All settings use the same set of trusted places that you've saved. You can't customise the trusted places differently for each setting.

Here are some common settings that use trusted places:

  • Extend Unlock: This setting can use trusted places to keep your device unlocked for longer when you're in a trusted place. In the 'Extend Unlock' settings, turn Trusted places for Extend Unlock on or off.
  • Identity Check: This setting can use trusted places to help protect your device when outside trusted places.

Tip: To check or edit settings that use trusted places, you need biometrics or a PIN.

About trusted places

How trusted places works

To let your device know when you're in or near those locations, you can set up trusted places. If your device is in a trusted place, the settings that use trusted places can know whether your device is in or near trusted places. Your device's precise location won't be shared with the settings that use trusted places.

To determine when more security is needed, some settings use trusted places. For example, if your device is away from a trusted place, some settings might require an extra step to verify your identity.

Your trusted places are saved on your device and aren't shared with Google.

Location accuracy

When location is available, settings that use trusted places can know if your device is at or near a trusted location. Your device's precise location won't be shared with those settings.

Bear in mind that:

  • Location isn't 100% accurate and may not always be available. This can happen if signals are blocked or your device's location is turned off.
  • The boundaries of a trusted place can go out beyond the walls of your home or custom place. The accuracy of trusted places is approximately 100 metres.
  • Location signals can be copied or manipulated.
  • To minimise the impact on your device's battery, location doesn't always refresh instantly.

Tip: If trusted places don't work properly, you can open a map app and check if your location is available.
