Manage Android XR devices in your organization

You can use Android Enterprise to secure, manage, and deploy Android XR devices. This lets you protect corporate data, distribute apps, and control hardware features like cameras and passthrough sensors.

Android XR device types

Android XR is an operating system for extended reality (XR) hardware. It provides the user interface, app access, and AI assistance for these devices.

There are two main types of Android XR devices:

Device type

Description

XR headsets

Standalone devices that run a full version of the operating system. You manage XR headsets directly on the device, just like a mobile phone. Headsets display content in two ways:

  • Video See-Through (VST): Uses external cameras to stream the real world onto inside screens.
  • Optical See-Through (OST): Uses clear lenses to overlay digital images onto the real world.

AI glasses

Lightweight, companion devices that connect to a primary device, like a smartphone. Because they rely on a paired device, AI glasses do not run the full operating system. They offer hands-free tools using a built-in camera, microphone, and speakers.

All Android Enterprise provisioning modes are supported on XR devices. This includes DPC identifier ("afw#"), QR code scanning, and zero-touch enrollment which allows headsets to be pre-configured and shipped directly to end users. These features ensure IT admins can enroll and set up devices efficiently.

Managing XR devices

Android XR devices can be managed through full device management which offers comprehensive device and app management capabilities for company-owned devices.

Android Enterprise allows management of the following device feature areas. For the full list of supported features, read the developer guide.

Feature category

Description

Security and compliance

These features allow IT admins to protect corporate data and enforce device compliance.

Examples: Enforcing PIN/passwords, remote wipe and lock, Verify Apps enforcement, and hardware security management.

App and account management

These features use managed Google Play to distribute and configure apps.

Examples: Silent app distribution, managed configurations, enterprise binding, and managed Google Account provisioning.

Device policy and control

These features give IT admins granular control over device hardware, networks, and user permissions.

Examples: Wi-Fi and certificate management, disabling cameras, blocking screen captures, and preventing factory resets.

System and update management

These features control how the device handles operating system updates and default activities.

Examples: Over-the-air (OTA) system update policies, persistent preferred activity management, and remote device reboots.
