Configure your Google Analytics settings using Task Assistant

Task Assistant in Google Analytics can help ensure that your Google Analytics property is set up correctly and ready for you to get right to insight. You can use Tasks to track your set up progress.

Before you begin

  • Permissions: You must have the Google Analytics Administrator, Editor, or Marketer role to use Task Assistant. If you have the Analyst or Viewer role, you won’t be able to view or access the Task Assistant dashboard.
  • Account and Property: In Google Analytics, you can have one or more accounts. Each account can include one or more properties. The account you select determines which properties you can see. Ensure you are in the correct account and property.

Access Task Assistant in Google Analytics

  1. Sign in to Google Analytics.
  2. At the bottom of the left menu, click Tasks to get started.

In the “Tasks” dashboard, your tasks will be grouped into the categories listed in this section. Under each category, you will be guided on how to complete each task. You can click each task to expand it to start the setup process for each, or collapse it to skip or close it in the meantime.

Get started

Get started with Analytics by collecting data and deciding how it appears in reports.

Set up data collection

You can establish a connection to Google Analytics by adding the code or SDK to your website or app. This allows your reports to begin populating with data. You will be given the option to:

  • Take action: You will be taken to the “Data streams” tab under “Data collection and modification” to set up data collection. Learn more about setting up Analytics for a website and/or app.
  • Watch video: You will be taken to a new tab to watch a video that will help you complete the task. After watching, close the window to return to your “Tasks” dashboard to finish setting up.
  • Skip the task: If you plan to skip the task, you can click the task to collapse the expanded task.

Turn on Google signals

You can connect additional data from users signed in to their Google accounts. This provides cross-device journey views, demographics and interests reports, and stronger ad targeting. You will be given the option to:

  • Take action: You will be taken to the “Data collection” tab under “Data collection and modification”. Turn on the switch for Enable Google signals data collection. Learn more about activating Google signals for Google Analytics properties.
  • Watch video: You will be taken to a new tab to watch a video that will help you complete the task. After watching, close the window to return to your “Tasks” dashboard to finish setting up.

Set up key events

You can designate important user actions as key events to gain dedicated reporting, attribution insights, and bid optimization. Under this task, you will be given the option to:

Create audiences

Audiences are groups of users sharing attributes. You can share audiences with the advertising products you use. Also, you may group users based on behaviors and demographics, so you can target marketing and personalize experiences to drive conversions. Under this task, you will be given the option to:

  • Take action: You will be taken to the “Audiences” tab under “Data display” to create audiences. Learn more about creating, editing, and archiving audiences.

Connect your accounts

Connect other Google accounts to Analytics to get a unified view of performance and deeper insights into the customer journey.

Link to Google Ads

Linking your Google Ads account allows data to flow between Google Analytics and Google Ads. For example, you can create conversions in Google Ads based on Google Analytics key events. Check your Google Ads campaigns and Google Ads dimensions in Analytics, and make your Analytics audiences available in Google Ads to use as remarketing lists. Under this task, you will be given the option to:

  • Take action: You will be taken to the “Google Ads links” tab under “Product links” to create Google Analytics links to Google Ads. Learn more about connecting Google Ads to Google Analytics.
