[GA4] Syncing subproperties

Subproperties are available only to Google Analytics 360 accounts that are linked to a Google Marketing Platform organization with an active 360 order. Only a Google Analytics 360 property can be the source property for a subproperty.

Sync a subproperty to its source property so that it can use custom dimensions and custom metrics configured in the source property.

How it works

After syncing, the subproperty can only use the dimensions and metrics already defined in the source, and can’t edit, remove, or create new ones. Updates from the source are automatically reflected in the subproperty. When unsynced, the subproperty retains a copy and can edit these custom dimensions and custom metrics.

Note: Syncing isn’t available for roll-up properties. Learn more about roll-up properties.

Initial syncing can take up to 48 hours. Once they are ready to be used, the status will update to “Synced” in the source property’s Admin > Subproperty management.

Note: You can opt-in to sync a subproperty during the subproperty creation stage, or sync an existing subproperty that has no custom dimensions or custom metrics. To create a subproperty, you must be an Editor or above on the Analytics account, and the source property must be an ordinary property. You can’t create a subproperty from another subproperty or a roll-up property. Learn more about how to Create and edit subproperties.

Create and sync a subproperty

  1. In Admin, under Property, click Subproperty management > Create a subproperty.
Note: The previous link opens to the last Analytics property you accessed. You can change the property using the property selector. You must be an Editor or above to create a subproperty.
  2. Select a 360 source property under the Source property name menu.
  3. Enter a name for the subproperty and select the timezone and currency.
  4. Select “I'm aware of the additional cost in creating this property”, then click Next.
  5. Click Edit filter to configure the include and/or exclude conditions that define which event data from the source property appears in the subproperty.
  6. When you've finished configuring the conditions for the filter, click Confirm, then click Next.
  7. Under Choose what to sync to the subproperty, click the toggle next to Sync all custom dimensions and custom metrics to the subproperty.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Select an industry category for the subproperty, the size of the business you measure with the subproperty, and the reasons you use Analytics.
  10. Click Create.

Check subproperty sync status

  1. In Admin, under Property, click Subproperty management.
  2. Check the Sync status column next to the subproperty you want to check.
    • If the Sync status is “Synced”, it indicates that the subproperty has been synced completely.
    • If the Sync status is “Syncing…”, it indicates that syncing is in progress.
      • Note: Initial syncing can take up to 48 hours.
    • If the Sync status is “Not synced”, the subproperty is not synced, and is available for syncing when there are no existing custom dimensions or custom metrics.

Manage subproperty syncing

You can manage and perform sync-related activities for subproperties in the source property.

Sync an existing subproperty that hasn’t been synced yet

  1. In Admin of a source property, under Property, click Subproperty management.
  2. For a subproperty that isn’t synced, click the three-dot menu more menu in the corresponding row.
  3. Click the Sync custom dimensions and custom metrics button to sync the subproperty.
  4. If the subproperty has any custom dimensions or custom metrics, the Sync custom dimensions and custom metrics button will be unavailable. All existing custom dimensions and custom metrics will need to be deleted from the subproperty for it to be available for syncing.

Unsync a subproperty that has already been synced

  1. In Admin of a source property, under Property, click Subproperty management.
  2. For a subproperty that has already been synced, click the three-dot menu more menu in the corresponding row.
  3. Click the Unsync custom dimensions and custom metrics button to unsync the subproperty.
  4. If you unsync a subproperty, all custom dimensions and custom metrics will no longer be updated if the source property makes any changes to them.
  5. After unsyncing, the subproperty will retain a copy of all custom dimensions and custom metrics and will be able to edit that copy.
