Update your Google Analytics integration on Shopify with the Google & YouTube app

To prepare for changes on Shopify, you’ll need to move your Analytics integration from Shopify Online Store > Preferences page to the Google & YouTube app. Shopify is turning off the Google Analytics integration in the Shopify Online Store > Preferences page.

If you use this integration to load Google Analytics on your Shopify website, you need to update your Google Analytics tag to the Google & YouTube channel app to avoid disruption to your measurement. If you don't update your Google tag to the Google & YouTube channel app and/or remove your tag from Online Store > Preferences, Shopify will automatically migrate your tag to a custom pixel, which will result in degraded features and measurement performance in Google Analytics. Learn more about the impact of not updating.

Upgrading to the Google & YouTube app will enable you to continue measuring your Shopify website with Google Analytics as well as improving your measurement and campaign performance. Learn more about this change in the Shopify help center.

Update your Google Analytics integration

To upgrade your Analytics integration you need to:

Ensure Google Analytics is connected with the Google & YouTube app

If you’re already using Google Analytics with the Google & YouTube app

  1. In your Shopify account, go to your Shopify admin, then go to “Sales channels”, and “Google & YouTube”.
  2. In the “Your Google Analytics property” section, review the measurement ID that is already configured and confirm this is the Google Analytics property you want to use to measure your Shopify website.
    • If the Google Analytics property connected is correct, then proceed to the step below to check and remove your duplicate tags.
    • If the Google Analytics property connected is not correct, disconnect the property and select the correct Google Analytics property from the dropdown. Once you’ve set up the Google & YouTube app your data may take 24 to 48 hours to update.
  3. Once you are done with these steps, you need to remove your Google Analytics integration from your Online Store > Preferences to ensure there are no duplicate tags. Follow the steps below to check and remove your duplicate tags.

If you haven’t set up Google Analytics property with the Google & YouTube app

  1. If you haven’t set up a Google Analytics property with the Google & YouTube app, follow the steps to set up Google Analytics through the Google & YouTube app. (Note that if you already have the Google & YouTube app installed without Google Analytics connected, you can connect your Analytics property by clicking “Get started” in the Google Analytics 4 box on the overview screen of the app.)
  2. Once you are done with these steps, you need to remove your Google Analytic integrations from your Online Store > Preferences to ensure there are no duplicate tags. Follow the step below to check and remove your duplicate tags.

Remove duplicate Google tags

After setting up your Google tag through the Google & YouTube app, you need to ensure there are no duplicate Google tags.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Preferences.
  2. In the Google & YouTube section, click Change
  3. Delete your UA-XXXXX-Y ID and click Save

Ensure you’ve connected your Google Analytics property to your website using the Google & YouTube app as described above.

Impact of not migrating to the Google & YouTube app

If you do not migrate your Google Analytics property from Online Store > Preferences into the Google & YouTube app by February 2, 2025, Shopify will convert it to a custom pixel.

This change could create discrepancies in your data and cause features to stop working. If you do not make this update by February 2nd, the data reported in Google Analytics may change (or, in some cases, be lost) due to differences in event measurement and tag behavior. Specifically, you can expect the following impact:

  • Data reported in Google Analytics may change (or, in some cases, be lost) due to differences in event measurement and tag behavior.
  • Core features of Google Analytics such as enhanced measurement and cross-domain measurement might not work correctly.
  • Tag Assistant might not work or may incorrectly report on your Google tag.
  • Tag Diagnostics might not correctly identify your Google tag or might recommend features that do not work for you.
  • Settings you’ve previously added to the Additional Google Analytics JavaScript section will be dropped.
  • Consent treatment of your Google Analytics tag might change.
