A key event is an event that measures an action that's particularly important to the success of your business. When someone triggers the event by performing the action, the key event is recorded in Google Analytics and surfaced in your Google Analytics reports.
Google Analytics makes it easy to identify and measure these key events, giving you valuable insights into how well your website or app is performing.
You can use the following tools in Google Analytics to measure the performance of your key events:
- Realtime report: To check if Analytics is recording your key events, go to the Real Time report. You should notice your key events listed in the Key events by Event name card with at least one key event if they're triggering correctly.
- DebugView: The DebugView tool allows you to review events as they happen, making it great for real-time troubleshooting. Look for a flag next to your key event names to confirm they're being measured correctly.
- Advertising reports: After you verify your key events, visit the Advertising reports to understand how your key events are contributing to your marketing efforts. You can analyze key event paths, key event credit based on different attribution models, and key events triggered by channel. You can use a report filter to focus on a specific subset of the data. When you add a report filter to a detail report, the report filter appears below the report header. Hover over the report filter to see its definition or remove the report filter to see all the data in the detail report. If you remove the report filter, the report filter will be added back to the report when you leave it. Learn more about customizing filters.
- Key events metric: Use the Key events metric to add key event data to any report, like identifying how many key events happen on each page or screen. You can also select a key event from the drop-down menu to narrow the scope of the report to one key event.
