Block ad experiences

Control what kinds of ads and ad behaviors are eligible for your inventory

This article describes how to block certain ad experiences on a network or specified inventory within Google Ad Manager.

On this page:

You can block ad experiences from appearing on your network or specified inventory. Note that enabling blocks can reduce your revenue by not allowing some ads to serve.

Ad Exchange tags can't be used with protections. Implement Google Publisher Tags instead.

Applicable transaction types

Ad experience blocks apply to these transactions:

  • Open Auctions
  • First Look
  • Private Auctions
Private Auctions block settings are within the individual auction settings, rather than in the Ad content protections settings.

Block an ad experience

Get started

  1. Sign in to Google Ad Manager.
  2. Navigate to Protections, then Protections.
  3. Click New protection, then Ad content.
  4. Enter a name for your protection.
  5. (Optional) To target a type of inventory medium on which you want to control the display of ads, under "Inventory type," click Expand and select an option, such as "Games."

Choose your targeting preference

  1. Choose an option:

    • To protect all inventory, select Protect all inventory.

    • To protect specific inventory, select Only protect specified inventory.

      • To use a targeting preset, click the "Add targeting preset" menu and select an item.

      • To edit a targeting category, such as "Geography," click Edit and make your selections.
Learn more about targeting in protections.

Enable blocks for ad experiences

  1. Under "Blocks," next to "Ad experiences," click Add.

  2. To enable a block, click the switch on On.
Note that you can't enable blocks for both "Block display ads" and "Block non-instream video ads" at the same time, as this would block all ads. Blocks for ad experiences include:

    • Block display ads: Blocks all display ads. Allows only video ads for targeted inventory. In-stream inventory will continue to show video ads.
    • Block non-instream video ads: Blocks display ads that are VAST or otherwise contain a video file such as an MP4, WEBM, or HLS. This includes video ads that appear outside of a video player. For native video, Native video Guided design editor users need to set up a native video style to make their inventory eligible.

  3. Click Update.

Completion

  1. (Optional) Add any further protections as desired, such as an "Advertisers/Brands" block.

  2. Click Save.
