Set ads to open in a new tab or window

You can choose how click-through URLs open for visitors to your site or app.

As a publisher, you most likely want click-through URLs to open in a new tab or window. However, you can set them to open in the same tab or window in which the content is being viewed.

The "Target window" setting controls how click-through URLs open. Two options are available:

  • _blank: Opens the click-through URL in a new tab or window.
  • _top: Opens the click-through URL in the current tab or window.

You can configure the "Target window" setting at the network or ad unit level. The network level setting becomes the default and is inherited by your top-level ad units.

Notes:
  • The "Target window" setting only applies to directly sold line items and doesn't affect programmatic demand.
  • Webviews on iOS and Android do not support tabbed browsing. Learn how to override click behavior on IOS and Android.

This article describes how to set a default target window for your Ad Manager network, and how to change the target window for a specific ad unit.

Set a default target window for your network

You can set a default target window across your network. Top-level ad units in your network use this setting by default. You can change the target window later for any given ad unit at any time.

To set a default target window for your network:

  1. Sign in to Google Ad Manager.
  2. Click Inventory, then Network settings.
  3. Next to "Target window," click the menu Expand and select an option:
    • _blank: Opens the click-through URL in a new tab or window.
    • _top: Opens the click-through URL in the current tab or window.
  4. Click Save.

Change the target window in an unit

By default, your top-level ad units use your network's target window setting. You can change the default target window setting when you create a new ad unit, or in an existing ad unit, overriding the inherited network setting.

To change the target window in an existing ad unit:

  1. Sign in to Google Ad Manager.
  2. Click Inventory, then Ad units.
  3. Under "Name," click the top-level ad unit you want to update, and then click Settings.
Tip: By default, settings inherited from your network or a parent ad unit are indicated by the "inherited" icon Inherited. If you change a setting from the inherited value, the icon changes to  (in orange), indicating the setting has been overridden. Learn more in how overrides work.
  4. Next to "Target window," click the menu Expand, and select an option:
    • _blank: Opens the click-through URL in a new tab or window.
    •  _top: Opens the click-through URL in the current tab or window.
  5. Click Save.
