Remove Gmail from your Google Account

If you no longer want your Gmail address, you can remove it from your Google Account.

After you remove Gmail from your Google Account:

Before you begin

  • If you use Gmail through your work, school, or other group, contact your administrator.
  • To continue to use other Google services with your Google Account, you need an alternate email address that isn’t Gmail.
  • Before you remove Gmail from your Google Account, sign in to your Google Account and download your data.

Tip: If you can’t sign in, learn how to recover your Google Account or Gmail.

Delete your Gmail service

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Profile and then Manage your Google Account.
  3. On the left, click Data & privacy.
  4. On the "Data & privacy" page, scroll to the "Tools" section.
  5. Click Remove data from services you no longer use.
  6. Sign in to your Google Account.
  7. Next to "Gmail," click Delete .
  8. Enter an alternate email address.
  9. Click Next.
    • This sends an email to the alternate email address. Until you verify your address, your Gmail address and emails aren’t removed from your Google Account.

Recover your Gmail address

Even if you remove your Gmail address, you can get it back. However, if it's been a while since you removed your Gmail address, you might not be able to get your emails back.

  1. On your device, open Gmail.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Follow the steps on the screen.
