Use another email to sign in to your Google Account

When you create a Google Account, you get a Gmail address, but you can use a different email address to sign in.

You can link a non-Gmail email address to the account and use it to sign in, recover your password, get notifications, and more.

When you pick another email:

  • You can't use a Gmail address.
  • You can't use an email address that's already linked to another Google Account.
  • You need to use your Google Account password to sign in with it.

Important: This only works if you already have a Google Account. Learn how to create a new Google Account with an alternate email address.

Add an alternate email address

  1. Open your Google Account.
    • You might need to sign in.
  2. Click Personal info.
  3. Click Email.
  4. Next to "Alternate emails," click Add alternate email.
    • You may need to sign in again.
      • If you use an account from your work or school, you might not find this option. Ask your administrator for help.
  5. Enter the email address you own.
  6. Click Add.

In your other email, you’ll get a message with a verification link from Google. To sign in:

  1. Open the email.
  2. Click the verification link.
  3. Sign in to your account with a different email address.
    • You might not get the email right away.

Tip: If you can’t find the message, learn how to find the verification email or request a new one.

Remove alternate email addresses

  1. Open your Google Account.
    • You might need to sign in.
  2. Click Personal info.
  3. Click Email.
  4. Click Alternate emails.
    • You might need to sign in again.
  5. Next to the other email address, click Remove Remove.

To remove usernames from your Google Account, go to Manage your email addresses.

When people find your Gmail address instead of your alternate email address

When people share things with your other email address, they can sometimes find your primary Gmail address instead. Some examples are:

  • Google Docs: When someone shares content, like a document, with your other email address, your Gmail address shows instead of your other one.
  • Google Sites: When someone shares a site with your other email address, your Gmail address shows instead of your other one.
  • Calendar: If you answer a calendar invite with your other email, the person who sent the invite gets your Gmail address. Learn how to respond to event invitations.
  • Google Keep: When someone shares a note with your other email address, your Gmail address shows instead of your other one.
  • Google Groups: If you remove an alternate email address that was part of a group, your Gmail address might show up instead.
  • Google Ads: If you use your other email to use Google Ads, both your Gmail and other email address show up.

Remove your email address from someone else’s Google Account

If someone accidentally adds your email address to their account for password recovery purposes:

  • You get an email from Google about their account.
  • The notification can be about the creation of a new account, a password change, or contain a password-reset link for their account.

If you get one of these emails:

  • Your account is safe.
  • You can remove your email out of the other person’s account.
    • Click the link in the email and let Google know that you didn’t create this Google Account.
      • Your address is removed from this account’s recovery options to avoid emails about this account.
    • If you click the link, you can choose not to remove your email.
