Turn off Meet meetings and calls for your organization

This page is for administrators who manage Meet for an organization or school. To manage your own Meet calls, go to Start or schedule a Google Meet video meeting.

Choose your edition below:

  • Business / Enterprise—Non-Education editions
  • Education—Education editions

With a Google Workspace Education edition, you can prevent users at your school from starting or joining Meet meetings. Or you can just turn off their ability to start meetings. Turning off either setting prevents people from using Meet in the integrated Gmail experience

Turn off call creation (Education editions)

If you turn off call creation, users can still receive Meet calls or join Meet meetings created by others. This setting doesn't impact Legacy or "Duo-type" calls.

Before you begin: If needed, learn how to apply the setting to a department or group.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account to the Google Admin console.

    If you aren’t using an administrator account, you can’t access the Admin console.

  2. (Optional) To apply the setting only to some users, at the side, select an organizational unit (often used for departments) or configuration group (advanced). Show me how

  3. Click Meet video settings.
  4. Click Call Creation and check or uncheck the Users can create their own meetings or make calls box..
  5. Click Save. Or, you might click Override for an organizational unit.

    To later restore the inherited value, click Inherit (or Unset for a group).

Turn off all Meet meetings (Education editions)

To turn off all Meet meetings for your school, turn off the Google Meet service. If you turn off all Meet meetings, users in can’t join or create Meet meetings when signed in to their Workspace account. You might want to do this if you’re transitioning to another conferencing service.

If you turn the Meet service off, Calling in Meet accounts will also be turned off and users will lose all of the data associated with those accounts. That data cannot be recovered.

Before you begin: If needed, learn how to apply the setting to a department or group.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account to the Google Admin console.

    If you aren’t using an administrator account, you can’t access the Admin console.

  2. To turn off Meet for everyone, click Service statusand thenOff for everyone.
  3. (Optional) To turn a service on or off for an organizational unit:
    1. At the left, select the organizational unit.
    2. To change the Service status, select On or Off.
    3. Choose one:
      • If the Service status is set to Inherited and you want to keep the updated setting, even if the parent setting changes, click Override.
      • If the Service status is set to Overridden, either click Inherit to revert to the same setting as its parent, or click Save to keep the new setting, even if the parent setting changes.

  4. (Optional) To turn on a service for a set of users across or within organizational units, select an access group. For details, go to Use groups to customize service access.

Changes can take up to 24 hours but typically happen more quickly. Learn more

After turning off Meet meetings

If meetings are turned off for your organization, you might need to change additional settings. 

Remove the Meet add-in for Outlook

If you installed the Google Meet add-in for Microsoft Outlook, you will need to turn off or remove the add-in. For details on turning off the add-in for Outlook, refer to your Microsoft documentation.

Change room resource details

If you added conferencing details to a room resource, update that resource to accurately reflect what’s available to users.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account to the Google Admin console.

    If you aren’t using an administrator account, you can’t access the Admin console.

  2. Click Manage resources.
  3. Click a room resource.
  4. Click Details or Features to edit the information.
  5. Click Save.

Delete Looker Studio reports

If you created any Looker Studio reports for conferencing data, you should delete them. For details, go to Delete a report.

Remove allowlisted Meet servers

If you allowlisted media servers for Meet, you can optionally remove them. For details, go to Prepare your network for Meet meetings.
