When you create a meeting invitation using Google Calendar and add a specific meeting room, the meeting is displayed on the Google Meet hardware or Chromebase touchscreen in that room. You can use the touchscreen to join meetings, control audio and video, and more.
Optionally, you can attach a keyboard and mouse to a Chromebase device to use with the touchscreen.
Use the touchscreen to join a meeting and add participants
To join a scheduled meeting, just tap the meeting name on the touchscreen.
If you don’t see the name on the touchscreen:
- In the event invitation, get the meeting code or name.
- On the touchscreen, tap Enter a code or nickname, enter the code or name, and tap Join.
- Tap Enter a code or nickname and tap Join.
- Share the meeting code with the people you’re meeting.
Tip: Meeting codes generated by the Meet touch controller, will expire when all users leave the meeting. Learn about Google Meet meeting codes.
With Connect Room in Meet, you can quickly start meetings inside Meet rooms from your laptop. This feature saves time and simplifies the process to join and start meetings.
Important: This feature isn’t available to all users yet. However, you can access it through the Google Meet external preview rooms program.
Start a meeting with Connect room:
Before you begin
To access Connect Room in Meet, your administrator must first turn on the Proximity Detection device setting in the Admin console. Learn how to turn proximity on or off for Meet hardware devices.
- Enter a Google Meet Hardware enabled conference room.
- On your laptop, go to Google Meet.
- On the Meet page, you can either:
- Enter a code or nickname click Join.
- Select a scheduled meeting.
- It re-directs you to the pre-meeting, also known as the green room. Once in the green room, on the right side of your screen, the “Use Companion mode” button changes to “Room detected” and then transitions to “Connect Room.”
- Click Connect room.
- You can directly join the meeting via the Google Meet Hardware device and your laptop automatically checks into the room through Companion Mode.
- When you’re in Companion Mode, you can:
- Use Meet features that aren’t available through the Meet Hardware device. This includes features such as Q&A and Polling.
- Make your presence easily recognizable when multiple people join a meeting from the same room. Learn how to use Companion mode for better collaboration.

Add people.
- Enter the email of the new participant and tap Send invite.
To add someone by phone, your administrator has to enable the Call Phones feature in the Google Admin console. For more information, go to Change settings for all devices.
Also:
- Your hardware must be located in specific countries.
- Calls can only be to the U.S. and Canada.
- Calls to emergency services are not supported.
If you add someone by phone, they join as audio-only attendees.
To add someone by phone to a video meeting:
- More actions
People.
- Tap
Add people.
- Tap Call
.
- Enter the phone number.
- (Optional) To open the keypad to enter additional numbers, such as an extension, select the phone number from the participant list
tap Dial
.
- If you need to hang up, select the phone number from the participant list
tap End call.
Participants can join using a meeting code, dial-in phone number, or PIN. To see this information for the current meeting, tap View meeting details.
Use the touchscreen to control audio and video
During a video meeting, you can see the list of participants on the touchscreen. To control their participation and who you can see, tap the participant, and then choose an option:
- More actions
People.
- Tap the participant, and then choose an option:
- To mute a participant, tap Mute
.
If you mute someone, you cannot unmute them. They need to unmute themselves. - To see a participant on the display in a room, regardless of who is speaking, tap More
Pin
.
- To remove someone from the video meeting, tap More
Remove
. If you want them to rejoin, you have to reinvite them to the meeting.
- To mute a participant, tap Mute
- To adjust the speaker volume in the room, tap the volume buttons
to increase or decrease the volume. drag the volume control.
- To mute or unmute the room, tap Microphone
.
Turn the room camera on or off
On the home screen, tap Camera .
Automatically frame participants
Use Dynamic tiles to automatically frame meeting participants and adjust the layout. It gives up to 3 people their own video tile, so everyone is easier to see.

- On the touchscreen, tap More actions
Camera controls.
- Select Dynamic tiles.
Enable device-based automatic framing
If you are connected to a pan tilt zoom camera from the Google Meet qualified peripherals list, then you can enable its device-based framing capability to automatically frame all the people in a room.
- On the touchscreen, tap More actions
Camera controls.
- Select an option such as Logitech automatic framing or Huddly smart framing.
For Poly devices, go to Poly Studio Support.
Manually control the camera
You can manually move the camera view if connected to a pan tilt zoom camera from the Google Meet qualified peripherals list. Manual PTZ controls are not available when using automatic framing.
- On the touchscreen, tap More actions

The administrator or the meeting coordinator must turn on recording in the Google Admin console. For details, go to Turn recording on or off for Meet.
- Start the meeting.
- Tap More actions
Record.
- Get consent from all participants and tap Start Recording.
- Tap Close to see the meeting participants or a presentation.
- When the meeting is over, tap Stop recording and Stop recording again to confirm.
A link to the recording is emailed to the meeting organizer.
- In a meeting, tap More actions
Activities
Live streaming.
- In a meeting, tap Start streaming
Start live stream.
- To stop streaming, tap Stop streaming

Collaborate from the touchscreen
Supported on Poly and Logitech devices.
You can use the display in the room to present content, such as slides, animations, video, and audio, from your laptop computer using the green HDMI cable attached to the touchscreen.
To share content, connect the HDMI cable to your device. The HDMI connector will immediately present your screen and audio to people in the room.
If you're in a meeting, tap More actions
Present
to present to everyone in the meeting.
You can present in Zoom calls using Meet hardware in interoperability mode. Turning on interoperability also turns on presenting with HDMI. For details, go to Allow Meet hardware to join 3rd party video conferencing services.
- New chat messages appear as notifications on the display (not on the touchscreen).
- Tap Chat to view a chat during the meeting.
- Tap Chat history to see the previous chat messages for the meeting on the display screen in the room. You can only see chat messages on the display. You cannot use the touchscreen to respond.
Manage your Meet hardware settings
Tap More actions to see the following options:
