If you use Google Meet’s Enterprise Content Delivery Network (Meet eCDN), you can use Silent Test mode to test various user and device configuration options during large meetings and live streams to optimize bandwidth. You can then review data on how Meet eCDN would perform with the configuration. Use Silent Test mode to fine-tune peering policies and custom rules to match your network topology.
How Silent Test mode works
When Silent Test mode is turned on, Meet eCDN runs in a full simulation mode and collects real-world data and statistics on how eCDN would perform with your configuration. It does this without relying on peer-based media delivery. You can turn on Silent Test mode for everyone in your organization. Or, set it up for a specific department or group.
Benefits of Silent Test mode
- No impact on viewer experience: Media keeps streaming directly from Google's servers, just like it would without Meet eCDN. Testing does not affect the quality for live stream viewers.
- Full peer-to-peer network simulation: Devices still find and connect to other peers to form peering groups. You can check peering policies and custom rules.
- Real-world role assignments: Just like live deployments, viewer devices are assigned client roles (Root, Leaf, or Branch) to build a complete peer-to-peer topology.
- Simulated data transfer: Devices exchange actual media data and report back any connectivity issues between peers. You can find networks that might experience media fallback (direct delivery from the backend instead of peer-based).
- Complete reporting: You can review full Meet eCDN statistics in the Meet quality tool.
Before you begin
- Complete the initial setup for Meet eCDN. For the steps, go to Host large live streams with less bandwidth using eCDN.
- Make any initial settings for the configuration you want to test. For the steps, go to Before you begin hosting live streams.
- Configure Meet eCDN as you would for a live event.
Tip: To limit the test scope, you can use custom rules to restrict the test to specific IP ranges or subnets.
Turn on Silent Test mode
Before you begin: If needed, learn how to apply the setting to a department or group.
-
Sign in with an administrator account to the Google Admin console.
If you aren’t using an administrator account, you can’t access the Admin console.
-
Go to Menu
Apps > Google Workspace > Google Meet.
Requires having the Service Settings administrator privilege.
- Click Meet video settings.
-
(Optional) To apply the setting only to some users, at the side, select an organizational unit (often used for departments) or configuration group (advanced). Show me how
Group settings override organizational units. Learn more
- Click eCDN settings.
- Check the Enable Silent Testing box.
-
Click Save. Or, you might click Override for an organizational unit.
To later restore the inherited value, click Inherit (or Unset for a group).
Review the test results
After you turn on Silent Test mode for your configuration and your users participate in events with it on, you can analyze the performance data and simulation statistics. Data becomes available as users join large meetings and live streams. For details, go to Track meeting quality & statistics.
