Migrating files from SharePoint Online using the new data migration service is currently in beta and subject to the Pre-General Availability Offerings Terms in the Google Workspace Service Specific Terms.

After you successfully migrate data, you can still move any new or updated files or folders to your organization’s shared drives before or after you exit a migration. Copy the new content by running a delta migration.

What is a delta migration?

During a delta migration, any files or folders that have been added or updated in SharePoint Online since your last migration are migrated to Google Workspace. A delta migration also identifies changes to previously migrated files or folders, such as changes to permissions, and updates the files or folders in Workspace.

A delta migration skips over objects that have already successfully migrated and haven't been updated. These items are marked as skipped.

Delta migration task

Changes in Workspace

Changes or additions to source files and folders since the last migration, including:

  • File names, data, and metadata
  • Modifications to file users or sharing permissions, including adding or removing users

Updates migrated to target files in Google Drive

Update permissions or user deletions from sharing lists

Updates migrated to target files in Google Drive

Update deleted source files and folders

Previously migrated files and folders are not deleted in Google Drive

What happens if I change the migration scope?

If you change the spreadsheet for the sites and site collections to migrate, such as:

  • Add a new row to the file—The SharePoint Online data in the row is migrated to Workspace. If a subsite or parent site of a previously migrated site hierarchy is added, then data is migrated to Workspace as per the new mapping.
  • Delete a row from the file—The SharePoint Online site or site collection is not included in the migration. Any files or folders that were already migrated to Workspace won’t change.

What happens if I change the identity map?

What happens during migration

Add user

The account is migrated to Workspace.

Delete user

The migration completes with an error noting that the ID mapping is missing.

Update user

Previously migrated files don’t change, but new files and folders are created to match the new mapping.

Start a delta migration

You must be signed in as a super administrator for this task.

A delta migration cannot always guarantee exact permission migration and can be delayed. Don't move files or folders during or in between migrations to ensure the permissions transfer correctly. Review permissions in your Workspace account, and check the migration report for missing or failed permissions.

  1. Sign in with a super administrator account to the Google Admin console.

If you aren’t using a super administrator account, you can’t complete these steps.

  2. Go to Menu and then Data > Data import & export > Data Migration (New).
  3. For Microsoft SharePoint Online, click Migrate to open your existing migration.
  4. Click Run delta migration.
  5. Review permissions in your Workspace account, and check the migration report for missing or failed permissions.
