To request access to chat migration, contact your technical account manager or customer engineer.
Requirements & setup steps for Google Workspace
- The migration must be run by a super administrator. For details, go to Prebuilt administrator roles.
- You must give each Google Workspace user a user account before they can sign in and use Google services. Chat migration only migrates data to accounts of existing users. It doesn't create user accounts from the data it migrates. For details about user accounts, go to Options for adding users.
- You need to turn on the Google Chat service for the users in your target account. For details, go to Turn a service on or off for Google Workspace users.
- Before your users can start to use Google services, they need a user license. For details, go to How licensing works.
- In your Google Admin console, complete the following actions:
- Turn off auto-deletion. For details, go to Turn auto-deletion on or off for messages in spaces.
- Automatically accept chat invitations.
Requirements for Microsoft Teams
- A user with the Global Administrator role.
- A good comprehension of your Teams' setup. To understand your teams' hierarchy, you can export a list of your teams as a comma-separated values (CSV) file. For details, go to Manage teams in the Microsoft Teams admin center.
Retention & legal holds
Chat migration for the new data migration service is intended as a productivity feature and is not designed to assist with legal compliance matters. You and your organization are responsible for assessing and meeting your organization's legal compliance needs. If you require chat messages for legal compliance purposes, consider backing up the messages in Teams prior to migrating data to Google Workspace.
